Biographical Sketch

Jean Craighead George was born July 2, 1919, in Washington, D.C. She attended Pennsylvania State University, graduating with a B.A. in 1941, and also studied at Louisiana State University, and the University of Michigan. She married John L. George in 1944, had three children, and later collaborated with her husband on several books for children. She worked as a reporter, teacher, editor, and writer, and began illustrating children's books in the 1940s, publishing her own first book in 1948, Vulpes, the Red Fox written with John George. Throughout her long and prolific career she has written both fiction and non-fiction for children and young adults. In many of her works she draws on her extensive knowledge of nature and natural history to create documentary-type novels whose characters observe the mysteries of nature and try to get answers to these mysteries, and to their questions about the world around them. Ms. George takes an holistic view of the Earth and seeks to help children and young adults understand the relationships between human life and nature. She incorporates ecological and conservation themes into many of her books, such as a desire to respect and protect animals and nature, and the conflict between humans and nature. Ms. George's books also help explain scientific data and research methods to young readers; a student of Theodore Roethke, she tries to make science poetic. These concerns and attention to accurate detail are found in her fiction and her non-fiction, and her books have been well received by readers and critics. She received a Newbery Honor in 1960 for My Side of the Mountain, and a Newbery Medal in 1973 for Julie of the Wolves. Ms. George does much of her own illustrating, and her illustrations also reflect her concern for accurate detail. Ms. George received the Kerlan Award in 1982.

 Scope and Content

Jean Craighead George's papers contain production material for over sixty titles published between 1948 and 2004, and include both manuscript and illustrative material. Her papers include typescripts, galley and page proofs, front matter, style sheets, notes, correspondence, illustrations in various media, sketches, jackets, layouts, and dummies. There is also some miscellaneous art done for a filmstrip.
