Joan Blos' papers focus on the background, writing and revision of seven of her books for children and young adults. In particular her Newbery award winning novel, A Gathering of Days. The collection includes holographs, typescripts, research materials - including photographs and original documents - notes, galleys, proofs, and dummies. There is also a selection correspondence, concerrned with the publiction and from readers, along with clippings and reviews of Ms. Blos' books. The collection also contains an article susbmitted by Ms. Blos to Horn Book, written by Betty Miles. In addition, drafts of Ms. Blos' Newbery acceptance speech and memorabilia from the Award's presentation are also included.

Biographical SketchJoan Winsor Blos was born December 9, 1928 in New York. Educated at Vassar College, she graduated with a B.A. in 1949, and continued her education at City College (New York), receiving an M.A. in 1956. She married Peter Blos in 1953 and had two children. Blos began writing children's book in the early 1960s, publishing her first book in 1964. A trip to New Hampshire led to an interest in the early history of the state and New England region and would eventually lead to the wrting of Blos' New berry award winning novel for children and young adults A Gathering of Days: a New England Girl's Journal, 1830-1832. Blos has continued to write both young adult fiction and picture bookss, publishing Brothers of the Heart: a Story of the Northwest, 1837-1838 in 1985.
Primarily known for her historical fiction, Blos is highly regarded in the genre for her accuracy, period detail, realism and for bringing to life for young readers an often overlooked period in American history.
