Soon after winning the 1961 Newbery Medal Scott O'Dell began to consider the Kerlan Collection as a repository for his manuscripts. The first donation arrived in 1989, a donation of correspondence to O'Dell from the public. Translations, first U.S. printings, galleys, and manuscripts in various states soon followed. After his death in October, 1989, his widow, Elizabeth Hall, continued to add to the collection.

Biographical Sketch

Scott O'Dell was a technical director for Paramount Studios, a cameraman for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a book columnist for the Los Angeles Mirror, a book editor for the Los Angeles Daily News, and, beginning in 1934, a full time author. Among other awards, his books earned several Newbery Honor Awards and the Newbery Medal (1961). In 1972 O'Dell became the second American to receive the Hans Christian Andersen Medal. He created the annual Scott O'Dell Historical Fiction award in 1981 to encourage the production of historical fiction. O'Dell also established a scholarship that bore his name. He died in 1989, at the age of 91, having nearly finished My Name Is Not Angelica, and after finishing the holograph for Thunder Rolling in the Mountains.

 Scope and Content

The Scott O'Dell collection includes production material for 26 books and 2 articles, predominantly correction holographs with typescript. Various states appear together in the same run of a manuscript. Rewritten (dropped) pages were retained with a run. In addition, O'Dell's acceptance speech for the Andersen Award is represented, along with materials relating to the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction, and the O'Dell scholarship.
