<p> Solveig Paulson Russell was born March of 1904 in Salt Lake City,
Utah. In her mid-teens, the Paulson family moved to Portland, Oregon, living on
a farm just outside the city. She went off to college at the University of
Oregon, spent four years as a teacher in various rural schools and finally
ended her teaching career as a junior high school teacher in Salem. The birth
of her daughter, Brenda, opened up the opportunity for Russell to pursue
writing as a career. In 1958, she published her first book, entitled
<emph render="italic">Trees for Tomorrow</emph>. Between that first creation
