		  Sketch</emph></head>
<p>Christopher Paul Curtis was born in Flint, Michigan circa 1954. To
date he has published only two books, but is the only writer to win both the
Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Award in one year (for his second
		  children's historical novel, <emph render="italic">Bud, Not Buddy</emph>). His
first novel, <emph render="italic">The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963</emph>,
won honor book designations from both the Newbery and Coretta Scott King Award
committees. He is the first African American to win the Newbery Medal since
		  1977. </p>
<p>Curtis attended college while working at an automobile plant, but soon
dropped out to work full time. His writing career began in the early 1990s when
he submitted a story to a writing contest at the University of Michigan-Flint
where it won the Jules Hopwood Prize. Curtis' wife suggested that he take a
year off from work at the plant to write and turn his story into a book. He has
continued to write since that time in addition to completing a B.A. degree in
political science and speaking about his life and work at schools and
		  libraries.</p>
