Jean Charlot's papers
focus on his work as an illustrator of children's picture books. The collection
contains production materials for twenty-one titles published between 1931 and
1980, and includes ink illustrations, ink and pencil sketches, pencil sketches,
watercolor studies, lithographs for an art catalog, dummies, and some notes and
photocopies for one title, A First Book, written by Mr. Charlot's wife, Zohmah
Charlot. There are also two lithographs for a catalog printed in 1948.

Biographical
Sketch
Jean Charlot was born February 7, 1898 in Paris, France. He came to
the United States in 1929 after spending several years in Mexico working as a
mural painter for the Mexican government. Charlot continued to paint murals in
the United States and also taught art for many years. He began illustrating
children's books in the 1930s, and throughout his long career illustrated books
for many well-known children's authors including Monica Shannon, Margaret Wise
Brown, Ann Nolan Clark, and Joseph Krumgold; the latter two authors' works
illustrated by Charlot, Secret of the Andes and
...And Now Miguel, were Newbery Award winners.
Several of Charlot's works emphasize his interest in and knowledge of Hispanic
and Indian cultures and draw on his experiences in Mexico. While some critics
called his early illustrations for The Sun, the Moon and
a Rabbit 1935) "barbaric", Charlot gained acclaim for his "architectural
style" that brought a book's setting to life and for his sympathy for different
cultures. He received Caldecott Honor book citations for A Child's Good Night Book and When
Will the World Be Mine? The Story of a Snowshoe Rabbit. Jean Charlot
died on March 20, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Scope and Content
Jean Charlot's papers includes production material for twenty-one
titles published between 1931 and 1980. There is also material for a work
called the Mexican Kitchen, printed as a catalog
in 1948. The collection includes ink, ink & pencil and pencil sketches,
dummies, ink illustrations, lithographs, notes, and studies.

Accession Information:
Part of this collection was originally given to Dr. Irvin Kerlan, who
in turn donated his collection to the University of Minnesota. Additional
material was given to the Children's Literature Research Collection by Mr.
Charlot's estate in 1980. This collection was processed with financial
assistance from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
