He came to		  the United States in 1929 after spending several years in Mexico working as a		  mural painter for the Mexican government. Charlot continued to paint murals in		  the United States and also taught art for many years. He began illustrating		  children's books in the 1930s, and throughout his long career illustrated books		  for many well-known children's authors including Monica Shannon, Margaret Wise		  Brown, Ann Nolan Clark, and Joseph Krumgold; the latter two authors' works		  illustrated by Charlot, <emph render="italic">Secret of the Andes</emph> and		  <emph render="italic">...And Now Miguel,</emph> were Newbery Award winners.		  Several of Charlot's works emphasize his interest in and knowledge of Hispanic		  and Indian cultures and draw on his experiences in Mexico. While some critics		  called his early illustrations for <emph render="italic">The Sun, the Moon and		  a Rabbit </emph>1935) "barbaric", Charlot gained acclaim for his "architectural		  style" that brought a book's setting to life and for his sympathy for different		  cultures. He received Caldecott Honor book citations for <emph		  render="italic">A Child's Good Night Book </emph>and <emph render="italic">When		  Will the World Be Mine? The Story of a Snowshoe Rabbit.</emph> Jean Charlot		  died on March 20, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii.</p> 	 </bioghist> 	 <scopecontent encodinganalog="520" id="sc"> 		<head><emph render="bold">Scope and Content</emph></head> 		<p>Jean Charlot's papers includes production material for twenty-one		  titles published between 1931 and 1980.
