Biographical
Sketch
Barbara Juster Esbensen (1925-1996), was born in Madison, WI, and
received her B.S. in Art Education from the university there in 1947. She
taught in Wisconsin, the Eastern Caroline Islands in the Pacific, Eureka, CA,
and at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, before becoming a creative
arts consultant at that college. Ms. Esbensen's work can be roughly divided
into three areas: collections of poetry, retold tales, and books about animals.
In all of them, her goal was, "To use language that will place an IMAGE in the
reader's mind." Ms. Esbensen received the 1988 Minnesota Book Award for her
retelling of the Ojibway folktale, The Star
Maiden. In 2002 she as given the Kerlan Award posthumously for her
attainments in the creation of children's literature and in appreciation of her
generous contribution of unique resources to the Kerlan Collection. Questions and comments concerning Barbara's

Accession Information:
Barbara Juster Esbensen (1925-1996) began contributing to the Kerlan
Collection in 1977, with a draft of A Celebration of
Bees: Helping Children Write Poetry manuscript. Contributions included a
collection of pictures she used as classroom aids and a sample of her students'
production. She made contributions of poetry and retold tales manuscripts in
1984, 1988, and 1990, including production materials for Cold Stars and Fireflies, The Star Maiden, Great Northern
Diver and Who Shrank My Grandmother's
House? Production and promotion materials for these and other titles
were sent as they became available. When Ms. Esbensen died in 1996, her family
contributed her remaining manuscript files to the Kerlan Collection, including
manuscripts for several unpublished titles.
