Biographical Sketch

Born February 21, 1943, in Jacksonville, FL, Jim Aylesworth found his beckoning to the children's literature world through his time spent teaching. According to Aylesworth, books were the tools he used to chisel out enough patience for a delicate execution in elementary teaching. After reading hundreds of books to his students, he began to dream of his eventual larger contribution to this special society. Hush Up! published in 1980 ushered in that membership. In 1996, Aylesworth retired from teaching to write full time. By this time he had written over twenty children's books and would go on to produce ten more within the decade. Aylesworth reflects on his early aspirations and motivations, "Now my own books join the hundreds of others that I read to my children...As I read, I often think that perhaps another teacher or parent in some other part of the world is also reading one of my books to his or her children."
