<bioghist encodinganalog="545" id="hb"><head altrender="history"><emph render="bold">Biographical Sketch</emph></head><p>Jan Spivey Gilchrist was born February 15, 1949, in Chicago, IL. She followed a career in fine art, and received several honors and recognition for her work. After about twenty years, she got the opportunity to illustrate children's books. She stresses that an illustrator is not as free to express herself as is an artist, because the illustrations must fit the author's intentions. She has also written a few self-illustrated books.
