 <bioghist encodinganalog="545" id="hb"><head altrender="history"><emph render="bold">Biographical Sketch</emph></head><p>Marilyn Nelson, formerly Waniek, was born April 26, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio. She received her B.A from the University of California Davis, her M.A from the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD. from the University of Minnesota. </p>
<p> Ms. Nelson is currently an Emeritus Professor at the University of Connecticut Storrs campus where she teaches creative writing and poetry courses. Her sixth book <emph render="italic">Carver: A Life in Poems</emph> won the several awards including the <emph render="italic">Boston Globe Hornbook Award</emph>. It was also a Newbury Honor book, a Coretta Scott King Honor Book and a finalist for the National Book Award.</p>
<p>In <emph render="italic">Something About the Author</emph> Nelson said <emph render="italic">For the last several years I've been writing poems with children, and I;ve learned alot about what makes kids laugh. Once as I read the last line of a poem, a third-grader literally laughed until he fell out of his chair! I consider that one of my greatest successes</emph></p></bioghist>
