Biographical Sketch

Lee J. Ames was born January 8, 1921 in New York City. He pursued higher education at Columbia University and began illustrating children's books in 1948. Ames throughout his lifetime has illustrated countless novels with such authors as Jeannette Nolan, Harold McCracken, Alvin and Virginia Silverstein.

The Lee Ames Collection contains both written and illustrative production material for four titles, two from the 1950s and two from the 1980s. Scope includes corrected typescripts, front matter, galley proofs, correspondence, tempera studies, felt pen illustrations, and a pencil illustrator's dummy with text proof paste-up. Ames collaborated with James Arthur Kjelgaard, Glen Rounds and Harold McCracken for the materials found in the Kerlan Collection.
