Leclaire [Gowans] Alger was born May 20, 1898, just south of Lake Erie
in Youngstow, Ohio to Louis Peter Gowans. In 1916, she married her first
husband, Amos Hoffman who died two years later in 1918. A decade later, Alger
graduated from the Carnegie Library School, a name that would grow quite
intimate through her thirty-seven years of service with several branches of the
Carnegie Library. Ms. Leclaire remarried several years after the death of her
first husband and devoted much of her time to writing remakes of old Scottish
folk tales. She is the author of over twenty novels, including a library under
the pseudonym Sorche Nic Leodhas. Leclaire Alger is praised by critics now and
then for her ability to adopt and adapt Scottish folklore into the English
language with great style. She died in 1969.
