		<head altrender="history"><emph render="bold">Biographical
		  Sketch</emph></head> 
		<p>April 18, 1908, Gudrun Alcock was born in Stockholm, Sweden. After
		  coming to the United States, she received her B.S. at Northwestern University
		  in 1928. Alcock concentrated her studies in school around art, English, and
		  advertising. They would prove advantageous in her career choices. From
		  preparing layouts for <emph render="italic">Redbook</emph> to the first woman's
		  editor of the <emph render="italic">Chicago Sun (Times)</emph> to jet setting
		  around the world, Alcock channeled the experiences of her life into visceral
		  children's stories. She writes, "Yet the writing of books has been my happiest
		  accomplishment in all these years. To have held a new book in my hands and
		  realized that I created it was to feel deep satisfaction, even surprise."</p>
