Biographical Sketch

Harry Behn was born in 1898 in Yavapai County, Arizona. He graduated from Harvard University with an SB in 1922. He worked as a scenario writer for motion pictures and later taught writing at the University of Arizona. He published his first book of poetry Siesta in 1931 and began writing children's books. Harry Behn wrote and translated poetry, especially haiku, for children. He also wrote fiction for older children and young adults including The Faraway Lurs (1963). Harry Behn illustrated many of his works and received several graphic arts awards for his artwork. He died in 1973. Biographical Sources: Something About the Author, v. 2 p. 17-19, v.34, p. 40.  Scope and Content

The collection contains production materials for seventeen titles published between 1949 and 1971. It includes corrected typescripts, corrected carbon or part carbon typescripts, corrected galley proofs, front matter, a dummy, a paste-up and research material, sketches and illustrations done in a variety of media, many with separations, dummies, preliminary prints and proofs. There is also correspondence to and from Harry Behn, including some from Eleanor Farjeon and Margaret McElderry, miscellaneous manuscripts for stories and speeches, miscellaneous artwork, articles and papers about Harry Behn, lectures and teaching material, scrapbooks and three copies of an award.
