 <bioghist encodinganalog="545" id="hb"><head altrender="history"><emph render="bold">Biographical Sketch</emph></head><p>Clement Clarke Moore was born July 5, 1779, in New York City, and died July 10, 1863, in Newport, RI.  He was a poet, scholar, and educator.  Beginning in 1821 he as a professor of Biblical Learning at the General Theological Seminary in New York City; he was also a professor of Oriental and Greek literature.  He jpublished a number of scholarly works, but his writing for children was limited to his poem, A Visit From St. Nicholas, better know today as The Night Before Christmas.
