Born in Keokuk, Iowa on September 2, 1887, Pence's YMCA career covered
a period of more than 40 years. He began in student work at Robert College,
Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey and in Illinois. Other positions included
war service in France and with the National War Work Council, and 23 years on
the staff of the National Council in the personnel department and later as
director of the Bureau of Records, Studies and Trends and editor of the YMCA
yearbook. After retirement in 1949, Pence represented the World Alliance of the
YMCAs at the United Nations, where he was one of the best known and widely
respected representatives of non-governmental organizations.
