HISTORY OF HOLIDAY HILLS

The Holiday Hills site in Pawling, New York has been the location of a racetrack, sanitarium, a vacation spot for Consolidated Edison employees, and an Air Force convalescent camp. In 1947, the Young Men's Christian Association of the City of New York purchased the property and established a conference and vacation center for young adults from New York City. At the beginning, Holiday Hills was open in July and August for use by individuals and conference groups, and eventually throughout the remainder of the year for conference groups. Recreational facilities included water sports, crafts, tennis, soft ball and baseball, bocce, dancing, movies and hay rides. In 1957, horseback riding was added when the Bar-Y ranch was added. In 1967, the Gayle Lathrop Memorial Educational Center opened, and in 1973, the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Center was addded. Holiday Hills became officialy titled the Continuing Educational and Conference Branch of the YMCA of Greater New York. The facility closed in 2003, when it was sold to the Town of Pawling, New York, for use as a recreation center.

Informaton taken from items in the collection and from the Town of Pawling clerk's office.
