HISTORY OF WASHINGTON HEIGHTS YMCA

The Washington Heights branch began operations in 1891 in a frame house at 531 West 155th Street. It had outside tennis courts, two bowling alleys and a gym. The building burned in 1921, the land was sold, and the YMCA purchased a plot at 182nd Street and Broadway in anticipation of assembling enough land to rebuild. In the 1950s the Y made an effort to expand into underserved areas that included Washington Heights and Inwood. However, a new building was never constructed.

The branch continued to be listed in the official YMCA listing of branches until 1925, when it formally closed.

Information taken from The YMCA at 150: A History of the YMCA of Greater New York, 1852-2002, by Pamela Bayless (2002), from the collection and from annual reports.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION

The collection includes notes and documents related to determining the Jewish population of Washington Heights so that a rebuilt branch could be located where it would be most convenient for potential members. Also included are brochures and the publication Washington Heights Men.
