HISTORY OF YORKVILLE YMCA

TheYorkville branch of the New York YMCA was established in 1884 at 153-155 East 86th Street, to the east of Lexington Avenue. Also known as the East Side branch, it boasted an early bowling alley, complete with pin boys. In a few years, the branch had a gymnasium as well and reported in the annual report that both facilities were not just conducive to physical improvement, but helped young men get to know each other. It also conducted numerous educational and vocational programs, providing instruction in telegraphy and tailoring programs, the former in conjunction with Western Union. Students in the telegraphy program stayed on the job around the clock after the ocean liner Titanic sank in 1912, and tracked the progress of the rescue ship Carpathia as it steamed toward New York.

The branch kept careful track of the religious status of its members, reporting on the number who had been led to church membership as a result of its Sunday and Thursday meetings. Despite its success, the branch's aging physical plant and mounting debt led to its closure in 1927 even as board members were planning a capital campaign. The building was sold at public auction and soon demolished to make way for shops and offices. Former members continued to gather annually well into the 1950s for reunion dinners.

Information taken from The YMCA at 150: A History of the YMCA of Greater New York, 1852-2002, by Pamela Bayless (2002), from the collection and from annual reports.
