HISTORY OF THE BRONX YMCA

The Bronx YMCA was created in 1977 from a merger between the Bronx-Union branch and the Westchester-Bronx branch. The Bronx-Union branch, an outgrowth of discussions between the New York YMCA and the Young Men's Christian Union (an organization delivering YMCA services in the Bronx), was established in 1904 in a converted piano factory at 149th Street and Washington Avenue. The Westchester-Bronx branch began operations in 1946. It operated extension centers in Calson Point, Fort Schuyler, Morris Park, Sound View, Throggs Neck, Union Port, and Westchester Square. In 1970 it opened a new building at 2244 Westchester Avenue after moving to temporary quarters in the Fourth Presbyterian Church. The merged Bronx branch increasingly adapted its programming to the changing needs of the community by establishing programs for the homeless. It also developed links between neighborhood seniors and local children to address problems caused by the uncertainty of many family situations in the branch's service area.

Historical information taken from The YMCA at 150: A History of the YMCA of Greater New York, 1852-2002, by Pamela Bayless, 2002; and from An Event on Mercer Street, by Terry Donoghue, 1951.

Board of Managers, 1922-1993

Includes minutes and other materials from the Board of Managers (sometimes known as the Committee on Management) for the Bronx branch and its predecessor branches, Bronx-Union and Westchester-Bronx. Materials for the Bronx branch cover the period 1977-1993 and include the bylaws and constitution for that branch. The materials from the Bronx-Union branch are primarily from the 1960s and 1970s, as are those from the Westchester-Bronx branch.

Events, 1913-1982

Material from the Bronx branch covers the period 1977-1982 and includes programs from the Annual Recognition Dinner (1977-1979, 1981-1982) and the Century Club Annual Breakfast (1979-1980). The Bronx-Union materials cover the period 1913-1962, and focus on events such as the 25th anniversary celebration, the Century Club Annual Dinner and Annual Breakfast, Boy and Girl of the Year awards, and a benefit dance. The Bronx-Union materials also include ephemera such as invitations, a scrapbook from the years 1929-1930, and a collection of memorabilia from member Daniel Moria from the years 1929-1942. The Westchester-Bronx items cover the annual recognition dinners in the years 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1974.

Financial Records, 1968-1987

Includes fundraising, development, and contribution materials from the Bronx branch and the predecessor branches, Bronx-Union and Westchester-Bronx. Also included is the 1980 annual budget for the Bronx branch.

Programs and Operations, 1889-1979

The series also includes program materials from the Westchester-Bronx branch from the 1950s, and operational materials from the Bronx branch from the 1970s

Publications and Reports, 1888-1969
