Biographical/Historical Notes

Emily Arnold McCully was born in Galesburg, IL (1939), but her family moved to Long Island after WWII. She earned her B.A. at Brown University in 1961 and her M.A. at Columbia in 1964, both in art history. After working as a free lance illustrator, she was asked to illustrate a children's book in 1966. Nearly 20 years later, she created her first solo production, the picture book, Picnic, which won the Christopher Award in 1985. Seven years later, Mirette on the High Wire appeared, which earned the next year's Caldecott Medal. McCully has created several series, including the "Grandmothers" series, a series about a family of theatrical bears, and has begun writing books of historical fiction, including The Ballot Box Battle, The Bobbin Girl, and The Pirate Queen.
