Summary Information
Collection Number: CLRC0150
Collection Size: .2 linear ft. (Manuscript and other material), 22.09 cubic feet (Illustrative material)
Abstract/Notes: Jack Kent wrote and illustrated about 40 children's books during his career, and illustrated nearly 20 books by other authors. Most of the Kent titles are represented in the Kerlan Collection, although few are represented by a complete set of production materials. The Kent contributions include studies and illustrations with pasteup text and separations, a limited correspondence, some dummies, notes, and a limited amount of research material. This is a collection of an artist's working files, and contains little ephemera or extraneous material.
Jack Kent was invited to contribute to the Kerlan Collection in 1971, and began with his contribution of The Fat Cat art and manuscript. He continued to support the collection throughout his life, and at his death, June Kent contributed the balance of her husband's production material files to the Kerlan. The collection includes materials for more than 70 titles, which includes some unpublished work, work for individual chapters of Happy Ever After, and other work that may have been done during his free-lance career. Materials include studies and illustrations with pasteup text and separations, many illustrator's dummies, some notes, correspondence and a few illustrator's proofs.
Collection is non-circulating, in-house use only.
This collection is protected by the Copyright law of the United States (Titles 17, U.S. Code). It is the user's responsibility to verify copyright ownership and to obtain all the necessary permissions prior to the reproduction, publication, or other use of any portion of these materials.
This collection was processed with financial assistance from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Biographical/Historical Notes
John Wellington (Jack) Kent (1920-1985) was born in Burlington, Iowa. He began his career as a free lance commercial artist at the age of 15 and worked until he joined the U.S. Army, Field Artillery in 1941. His syndicated comic strip, "King Aroo", was distributed internationally form 1950-1965, but he returned to free-lancing as a cartoonist and humorist in 1965. He began writing and illustrating children's books in 1968 and continued to produce children's books until he died of leukemia in 1985. His Just Only John received an award from the Chicago Graphics Associates and from the Chicago Book Clinic, and Mr. Meebles was named an "outstanding picture book of the year," 1976 by the New York Times.
