Biography

LeRoy Gaarder was born in Highland, Wisconsin, and attended school there and in Dodgeville, Iowa. Gaarder attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, for one year (1912-13) and then attended night school at the University of Minnesota from 1913 to 1917 while working in the offices of Miinneapolis' architects Cecil Chapman (1913), Mather & Boerner (1914), Howard Parsons (1915), and Purcell & Elmslie (1916-17). In 1917, Gaarder returned to Dodgeville and opened his own office (1917-18). He was in the U.S. Army for a year, but in 1920, moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota, where he opened an office, which he maintained until the 1960s.

Gaarder's first commissions were for the Farmers First National Bank (Rake IA, 1920) and Salem Lutheran Church (Albert Lea, 1922), followed by St. Paul's Lutheran (1925-26) and Queen of Angels Church (1937), both in Austin MN.

Gaarder received an appointment for life from Bishop Kelly of Winona, MN, to plan Queen of Angels Church and Parish Building, a project that lasted 27 years. During the Great Depression, Gaarder was appointed Consulting Designing Architect on the staff of the Public Buildings Administration in Washington D.C. He later became a project planner for the regional office of the PBA in Seattle, Washington (1943-44).

Scope and Content

In this collection are tracings, blueprints and building and detail photographs of numerous churches including Queen of Angels (1937-62), and Christ Episcopal Churches (1950-51) in Austin MN. Also included are St. Luke's English Evangelical Lutheran Church (Waukesha WI, 1925-26), Alden High School (Alden, MN, 1923), Danish Baptist Church (1925) and Zion Lutheran Church (1947, 1966, 1972), both in Albert Lea.
