The opening of the new Elmer L. Andersen Library is scheduled for April 9, 2000. This occasion will mark the official debut of this long hoped for building. An open house for the public will kick off the celebration.
Located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River (at the West end of the Washington Avenue Bridge), this new facility will house eight special collections and archival units, the headquarters of the MINITEX Library Information Network, and the Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC). Constructed in 1998 and 1999, this building will provide "state of the art" archival and special collections storage space, with the capacity for long-term growth.
By mid-December as we go to press, The Children's Literature Research Collections have been almost completely moved to the Elmer L. Andersen Library. This operation was accomplished during the Fall in three stages. The first stage, in early November, began by moving the books, periodicals, Hess Collection and Kerlan manuscripts into the new "cavern" storage area. The second stage, in early December, started moving the Kerlan art collection, Paul Bunyan Collection, AV Collection, Figurine Collection, and other materials into the "high bay" storage area. Materials in this area will be retrieved using a special machine and an operator. The third and final stage will include moving the staff and their offices. This move will take place when the above-ground portion of the building is ready. This will take place in January and February.
For more information about the open-house celebration on April 9, 2000, call 612-624-4576.
As I write this, the Upson Room stands empty of most of its Kerlan holdings, but the new year will bring a new space for all of us to enjoy. This past year has been a busy one for the Kerlan Friends. Under Becky Rapport's able leadership, we celebrated fifty years of the Kerlan Collection and twenty-five years of the Kerlan Friends and Award.
Phyllis Mattill and her Kerlan Award committee gave us a fine celebration of the treasures of the Kerlan Collection with the choices of Eve Bunting and Lois Lenski; and of the history of the collection with choices of Norine Odland and Edward Stanford-all four as winners of this year's Kerlan Awards.
For the Friends' summer event, Diana Swanson chaired a committee that provided delicious refreshments as well as a stimulating panel. Moderated by Ruth Berman, Marion Dane Bauer and Jane Resh Thomas discussed how they work with an editor.
Chris Dyrud produced a sturdy keepsake book bag decorated with Karen Ritz' drawing of the Upson Room.
Grace Kurtz and her committee have been leading fundraising activities, including the special drive for funds to celebrate the new building. The minimum goal has been met, but donations are welcome until January 31. The gift will be announced later in the spring.
In trying to make the materials in the collection more available we are experimenting with circulating portfolios by mail. The Marion Dane Bauer portfolio will be ready for circulation by mail early in 2000. We hope to add other portfolios if this is a service that schools and libraries in the state like. Also, we are beginning work with Karen Hoyle on a docent program so that groups of children may visit the collection to do research. Volunteers to help plan or to be docents are welcome.
Karen Hoyle helped us renew our $4000 grant from the Minnesota Humanities Commission and we have applied for other grants. Kerlan Friends have spoken about the collection and the Friends at educational and library meetings and written about the collection for various publications. The Outreach committee placed small book collections, showcasing the Kerlan Collection, in the President's Office, the Carlson School of Management, and Eastcliff. The Friends also are supporters of the current exhibit of Norwegian children's books. Other plans are under way as well as the usual activities and support the Friends offer the Kerlan Collection.
Finally, thank you to all of you who have helped the Friends this year-volunteering your time, your materials, and your financial resources.

MAGIC BOXES by Sandra Ure Griffin; an excerpt
Receiving the Keats Fellowship opened the doors to the Kerlan Collection for me. This has proved to be a wonderful experience. Over the past week, I feel like I've had the opportunity to visit with 17 different authors and illustrators. I've had a chance to "rub elbows" with 16 old favorites and one new one. They in turn took me by the hand and led me on a tour of twentieth century children's book publishing.
The first box I requested from the Kerlan Collection contained the work of Wanda Gág. Born in Minnesota in 1893, Gág grew up on the folklore of Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. She was 35 when her first (and most well known) book was published, Millions of Cats. Five years later, in 1933, she published The ABC Bunny, one of my favorite alphabet books.
This first box contained the original art The ABC Bunny. Clumsily, I pulled on the funny-looking white gloves. Carefully, I opened the lid of the box. My eyes widened when I saw the first item, a tiny dummy book. Folded from now-faded newsprint, the book contained quickly drawn rough sketches and scribbles. Accompanying it were some notes and lists of rhyming words. My first thoughts were of how much this little book reminded me of my own attempts at bookmaking. I felt an immediate kinship with Gág, a feeling that was to be repeated over and over as I "visited" other artists and authors.
Deeper in the box lay Gág's more finished sketches and at last, the exquisite lithographs that became the final illustrations for The ABC Bunny. How amazing it was for me to see the full progression of her work, from her earliest rough ideas to her finished book...
TROLLS, MRS. PEPPERPOT, AND BEYOND: CELEBRATING NORWEGIAN CHILDREN'S
BOOKS
The Norwegian Children's Book Exhibit opened on November 19, 1999 and
runs through January 9, 2000. The exhibit is open on weekdays from 10 a.m.
to 8 p.m. and weekends from noon to 5 p.m. in Wilson Library 4th floor
gallery, 309 19th Avenue South, Minneapolis University of Minnesota West
Bank Campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Groups may schedule
visits with the Center for Scandinavian Studies, 612-625-3388. This exhibition
was installed by CLRC staff.
PICTURE BOOKS IN THE 20TH CENTURY
Mr. Motoo Ito and his Globe Book Company, supported by Asahi Newspaper
Company, borrowed art from the Kerlan Collection, as well as other collections
for "Picture Books in the 20th Century" exhibit in Japan. Leonard Marcus
wrote an exhibit catalog text for this event. This traveling exhibit has
almost finished its tour of Japan. The last two exhibition sites are Tetsugoro
Art Museum in Iwate (November 14, 1999 - January 10, 2000) and Daimaru
Museum Kyoto in Kyoto (February 10 - February 22, 2000).
WORLD VIEWS: MAPS AND ART
The Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota is currently
exhibiting World Views: Maps and Art. This exhibition addresses the complex
relationship between the world, maps, and art. The Weisman Art Museum has
borrowed three books from the Kerlan Collection to use in this exhibit.
The exhibition opened September 12, 1999 and runs through January 2, 2000.
For more information, call 612-624-9494
Books are now on view at President Yudof's office, at Eastcliff and in the Carlson School of Management. In the future, book baskets will be on display in the College of Human Ecology on the St. Paul campus and in other locations beyond the University setting. One of the latter is the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
By placing books in the hands of the public, we hope more people will become aware of this valuable University resource.
