From the President

Seasons Greetings!
I am happy to report that these are exciting times for the Kerlan Collection and for all Kerlan Friends. We will celebrate both the 50th anniversary of the Collection and the 25th anniversary of the Friends during 1999. The Collection should also be moving into its new, riverside location before the millennium arrives, and the Friends of the Library are planning to celebrate in grand style. Both our Kerlan Award and summer event celebrations will be very special this year, so look for information in upcoming newsletters and be sure to attend.

Because of a successful fund appeal in December last year and the gala book sale and auction during the summer event in June, the Friends have raised thousands of dollars to support the Collection during 1998. We also worked with Karen and received a $4000 grant from the Minnesota Humanities Commission. The grant, which we will be eligible to receive each year, will be used to support the Kerlan Award celebration and other ongoing projects. The Development Committee is planning a fund drive this year to fill special Collection needs in their new space. There will also be many volunteer opportunities for any Friends who would like to be involved in our activities during this banner year.

If you know someone who would enjoy being a Friend, 1999 will be a great year to get them to join or to give them the gift of a membership.

Happy Holidays to you all,
Rebecca Rapport
President, Kerlan Friends

Minnesota Humanities Commission

At the Kerlan Friends board meeting on December 1, there was considerable discussion about appropriate groups with whom to network as a result of the MHC program attended by Norma Gaffron and Gloria Kortmeyer. Some board members offered to serve as the liaison with specific organizations to which they belong or have personal contacts.

Information about the forthcoming Kerlan Award exhibit and events will appear in the spring newsletter that will be sent to all groups represented at the meeting.
