policies/procedures: collection development policy for the CLRC, including the kerlan & Hess collections

The CLRC acquires books and primary source materials related only to children’s books for adult research and exhibit purposes involving several collections.

The Kerlan Collection
The Collection preserves books in first printing (or facsimiles), original manuscripts and illustrations for research and exhibit, and many related materials. Also included are over 300 periodical titles and more than 1,200 reference titles, correspondence, posters, toys, photographs, audiovisuals, and publishers' catalogs. Its goal is to document as fully as possible the activities of authors and illustrators of award winning books. Some diaries and journals are included.

The Hess Collection has primarily inexpensive, popular literature from the 19th and 20th centuries, such as story papers, dime novels, pulps, and comic books. Some popular items include Beadle’s Dime Novels, The Boys of New York, The Seaside Library, and Alger Series Books.

Oziana
A personal collection of Oziana, other Baum-related materials, and miscellaneous children's literature collected by Laura Jane Musser throughout her lifetime is a separate entity to Oz already in the Kerlan Collection Oz books and manuscripts. The Musser addition includes Oz-inspired short story manuscripts written by members of the International Wizard of Oz Club, several of that club's membership lists, annual meeting programs and menus. Scattered holdings of periodicals, such as the Ozmapolitan, the Oz Observer and the Oz Trading Post are included. There is a large file of newspaper clippings. Correspondence includes notes from Bill Eubank and Jay Delkin. Sheet music includes original 1939 Feist publications of "Over the rainbow," "I wish I had a brain," and "We're off to see the Wizard." Catalogs, calendars, coloring books, and comic books fill out this part of the collection. he repository for the personal papers and manuscripts of authors, poets, small presses, and other related individuals and organizations either born in Minnesota or who resided in the state for a significant length of time. Types of materials sought include diaries, correspondence, journals, financial records, notes, outlines, drafts of written works, photographs, and copies of published editions. All time periods are of interest in this collecting program.

Periodicals
Three hundred titles have been transferred from the general collection or acquired.

Series Books
Boys, Girls,and Family series books were published in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Among them are Bobbsey Twins, Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew.

Treasure Island Illustrated Editions, numbering more than 450 books collected and donated by Lionel Johnson, arrived in 2000 from Milwaukee. Artists such as Edmund Dulac, Milo Winter and N. C. Wyeth interpreted the novel since its first appearance in magazine form. An American publisher provided the first illustrated edition in 1884, and the first printing is among the books donated.

The Beulah Counts Rudolph Collection
This collection holds figurines, bookmarks and cloth related to children’s books.

The collections are usually donated, although occasionally some are purchased through third-party gifts.

The collections are open to members of the University and other academic communities, as well as the general public.

Formats
Most formats are paper-based, but three dimensional figurines and other objects, materials are also collected in A-V formats, i.e., CD-ROM, audio and video tape, photographs of all types, and motion picture film. No on-line databases are purchased or sought for the collection.

Language
--Primarily English-language materials are collected, but books may be sought in other languages especially for the Kerlan Collection. Scandinavian materials have been an historic interest. Books in original language as well as appropriate translations to /from English are acquired.
